Energy / Zimbabwe
“At the heart of Southern African Power Pool.”
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) ensure energy flows around, as well as through, a country with 5 different borders.
How do you assess the state of Zimbabwe’s energy sector?
The sector needs a lot of investors to increase our generation level, either through government, independent power producers (IPPs), or our sister companies. We have experienced load shedding due to this shortage.
What are the main misconceptions about the energy sector?
Many mistakenly think that IPPs are not given the chance to develop. The truth is, Zimbabwe’s policies allow for them to come and thrive. The second is in the area of tariffs. Tariffs are well negotiated between the IPP and the off-taker (which in the case of Zimbabwe is ZETDC). They can be secure in the knowledge that investors will get their money back.
Where do you see the most potential for investment?
Geographically, Zimbabwe sits at the heart of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). Most of that power passes through our network. The interconnectors going south need to be reinforced. We have lots of projects on the drawing board.
Where do you see potential for increased collaboration?
We want to build more transmission lines. We have received many inquiries from big companies; indeed most of those showing an interest are companies from China.
